What is “spec?”

“Spec” has become the short form for any work done on a speculative basis. In other words, any requested work for which a fair and reasonable fee has not been agreed upon, preferably in writing.

An example:
NOT AN ACTUAL CLIENT

--Landscaping Client:
I need a website designed.  It needs to be fresh and clean and something that represents my business.  When can you start?

--WPD:
I am available now.  Can you give me a better description of what you need, colors, layout style, what type of interactivity you would like for your clients to get out of your website.

--Landscaping Client:
How about you show me what you can do and I will let you know if I like it.

--WPD:
How about you come and landscape my yard and my neighbors yard for a month and I will decide if I like it.
